Course Update 2009

What’s Going On?

Firstly I’ll start with an apology.  I apologise for not keeping you better informed and for the way parts of the course look.  Right that’s that out of the way.

Why are the greens, tees and surrounds looking so stressed?   A few weeks ago we had a terminal occurrence with the automated irrigation system, which meant we could only hand water.  It so happened that this failure occurred during the hottest, driest period we have experienced since 1929.  We contracted an irrigation company, at considerable cost, to replace the computer controller and electrical decoders in all irrigation points, and to replace damaged cables.  Unfortunately, due to various circumstances, this work was unable to be started until start of July, just over 3 weeks since the system went down.  We were therefore without an automated system for almost 4 weeks.  This is what has caused the greens, tees and surrounds to suffer as they have.  The system is now functioning and we have been irrigating for just over a week and I hope you have noticed some improvement.  Obviously we will continue to irrigate for the rest of the summer.  The grass is not dead, merely stressed and should recover fairly quickly.

As you will notice we have hollow tined the surrounds, these we will be seeding and then top dressing with green waste.  The green waste will hopefully improve the very poor soil we have surrounding our greens and aid in the germination of the grass seed.

Please be assured that no one cares more about the Course than I do, and I more than anyone want it to look and play at its’ best.  So I’ll apologise again for not keeping you more informed and will endeavour to do so more in the future.

Regards

Kevin Morris
